Federal Union - Time to Decide
The UEF Bureau met in Brussels on 15-16 January to prepare for the European Congress of UEF which is to be held, also in Brussels, on 25-27 March.
UEF President Andrew Duff led the Bureau in a discussion of the continuing euro crisis, the reform of the European Parliament and the collapse of the momentum behind further enlargement. These three topics will form the core of the theme resolution for the Congress under the title 'Federal Union ‑ Time to Decide'. Mr Duff said at the end of the Bureau meeting: "The reaction of the European Council to the crisis has been late, short term and inadequate. What Europe needs is a blueprint towards proper economic government that will calm the financial markets and have democratic credibility. "The European Parliament, Commission and Central Bank are asked to give their consent to the use of the fast-track treaty revision to install a permanent crisis mechanism. We hope that they attach a catalogue of further reforms which they wish to see implemented over the medium term, including a treasury facility for the Commission, automaticity of penalties and the eurogroup acting in a unified manner at the IMF."
