New Energy for Europe! Federal Congress of the UEF Germany
"New Energy for Europe!". This was the motto of this year's Federal Congress of Europa-Union Deutschland (UEF Germany). More than 250 delegates and guests met last weekend (November 20-21) in Erfurt.
The guest speakers of the congress, Prime Minister of Thuringia Christine Lieberknecht, EU Commissioner Günther Oettinger, and the writer Navid Kermani gave important ideas for the political debate of the delegates from all over Germany and Brussels. Over ten resolutions that deal with different areas of European policy were adopted by the delegates.
Ms. Lieberknecht spoke about the role of the German states in Europe. She underlined that Thuringia has benefited a lot by the EU funds over the last 20 years. Mr. Oettinger criticized the current energy policy in Europe and called for a cross-border EU energy policy. National strategies alone could be a risk for the prosperity and security of Europe. In the field of renewable energies Mr. Oettinger recommended to seize European chances.
President of UEF Germany Peter Altmaier asked for more participation of the civil society in European debates. He criticized the nationalistic discussions on the stability of the euro. In several working groups, delegates discussed amongst others the "European idea in the 21 Century” and started the debate for new policy statements of Europa-Union Deutschland.
In the evening of the first day of the congress the Minister for Federal and European Affairs, Dr. Jürgen Schöning, received the delegates and guests in the Thuringian State Chancellery. The highlight of the Federal Congress on Sunday was the speech of the writer Navid Kermani on the borders of Europe. For him, belonging to Europe is neither ethnic nor religious justifiable. The borders of Europe could not to be located geographically. In his opinion, Europe is everywhere where people share European values.
