UEF: Parliament accepts Federalists' petition for fiscal union and federal economic government

The European Parliament today accepted a petition which challenges it take initiatives to build a federal Europe. The petition was lodged by Andrew Duff MEP, President of the Union of European Federalists (UEF), Jo Leinen MEP, President of the European Movement International (EMI) and Pauline Gessant, President of the Young European Federalists (JEF-Europe).

The petition calls on the Parliament to use its Lisbon treaty powers to initiate a further revision of the EU Union treaties with the objective of creating a full fiscal union with a federal economic government.

The petition led to a lively discussion in the Petitions Committee watched by a crowd of federalist supporters who had gathered for the occasion.

The hearing will be followed up by a public hearing on federal government probably held in collaboration with the Committee of Constitutional Affairs (AFCO) and the Committee of Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) next year.
