Serbian Federalists joined Union of European Federalists
UEF Serbia was admitted as a full member of the Union of European Federalists. This was unanimously adopted by the Federal Committee of the UEF at the session held on 30-31 October 2010 in Brussels. Until now, UEF Serbia was a candidate section for the UEF membership.
With this accession, UEF Serbia became the 21st European section of the UEF, but first coming from the Western Balkans region, with rights and duties streaming from the full membership, which include the rights to propose resolutions and other decisions, take part in decision making, as well as the right of its delegates and members to take part in the work of the UEF bodies. Union of European Federalists is founded in Paris in 1946, as a supranational non-governmental organization, dedicated to the promotion of democratic and federal Europe. 65 Members of European Parliament from four different political groups and 20 EU member states are members of the movement.
Andrew Duff, MEP, UEF President, said: “European federalists warmly welcome Serbian colleagues to our family of political activists. In Serbia and across the Western Balkans the European federal message needs to be heard with clarity and passion. This step brings Serbia closer to its rightful membership of a strong and effective European Union – delivering progress and security within a lively democratic framework, which transcends the old nation states of Europe’s unhappy past.”
Marko Vujacic, UEF Serbia President said: “This membership is important contribution to the Serbian European integration. It is a process which does not include only job to be done by the government, but also by political parties, movements, civil society organizations, citizens. The membership allows access to one more forum to influence European public, to present position, politics and aspiration of Serbia to become the EU member state.”
