Wieland warns against a softening of the Schengen rules in the sense of a re-introduction of internal border controls within the European Union. “Together with the Benelux Countries, Germany and France have fostered the Schengen-Treaty. If exactly these two countries undermine the Schengen treaty, then there is serious cause for concern”.

EUD president Wieland: border controls destroy the spirit of Europe
“When we start to stand apart from each other, we will destroy Europe”, states Rainer Wieland, president of the Europa-Union Deutschland, commenting on media reports about German-French plans for a re-establishment of border controls.
